Miss Universe Apologizes for Steve Harvey’s Mistake
NEW YORK, NY- On December 20th, 2015 the Miss Universe program aired live from Las Vegas. With Steve Harvey as the host everything was running smoothly until Harvey falsely crowned Miss Columbia as the winner, when Miss Philippines actually won.
We would like to formally apologize to all the contestants as well as the viewers of this pageant. Miss Universe has been smoothly running for the past 64 years and we take great pride in our program and the women we empower as role models.
Harvey’s mistake reflected a negative light on our organization but it was completely unintentional and unexpected. Immediately after it happened Harvey was quoted saying, “Here’s the situation; Now, when the mistake was made, when I said the wrong woman’s name, I can only give information I had. No one knows, and that information is not in the teleprompter because you’ve got two women standing there. I read what was on the teleprompter, and then I read what was on the card.”
Since this unfortunate incident, we have been working to avoid this happening in future pageants by improving the way we relay information to future hosts. What happened on December 20th does not accurately reflect our organization and we would like to sincerely apologize to all that were affected by this incident.
