This is a fact sheet I wrote regarding local and national statistics about child abuse

Child Abuse and Neglect Statistics both locally and nationally

  • Every 10 seconds, child abuse occurs in America

  • Child abuse and neglect is on the rise in Indiana due to the increase in drug use and abuse

  • In 2013, 49 children died of either child abuse or neglect

  • Of the 49 fatalities, 29% were due to abuse and 71% were due to neglect

  • 1 in 4 girls are victims of child abuse while 1 in 6 boys are victims. Of these cases, 34% have been inflicted by family members of the family

  • Every year more than 3.6 million referrals are made to child protection agencies involving more than 6.6 million children

  • The US has one of the worst records of child abuse and neglect among other industrialized nations

  • On average, the US loses an average of four to seven children every day to child abuse and neglect

  • In 2014, state agencies found an estimated 702,00 victims of child maltreatment, that is just the number that was reported

  • Children who are neglected and abused face a higher risk of mental health disorders, additions and/or related issues such as: alcoholism and abuse, illicit drug abuse, depression, suicide attempts and more

  • In one study, 80% of 21-year olds who reported childhood abuse met the criteria for at least on psychological disorder
